Freedom is the gift that keeps on giving. Read the annual Giving Guide for our latest recommendations on tech gifts for your friends and family that promote #UserFreedom, not the interests of a "big tech" monopoly: u.fsf.org/377

According to the FTC, Zoom lied to users about end-to-end encryption for years. This is one of the obvious perils of nonfree software: you can't verify that the software isn't abusing you, you just have to take their word. u.fsf.org/371

The trouble users had yesterday launching apps on #macOS isn't just a technical problem, but a moral one. Operating systems should service their users, not phone home to a corporation to see if they're "permitted" to run the program. #Apple

There's a lot of handwringing these days about "ransomware attacks" where companies' data is encrypted & a ransom (usually bitcoin) is demanded to unencrypt it. The real injustice here is that a company is forced to *trust* their data to someone inherently untrustworthy. Any time you need to click "I ACCEPT" on a software product to access your data, you're in precisely the same situation. Most proprietary software biz modes are indistinguishable from ransomware models.
