When it comes to self-hosting a #fediverse instance, perhaps even a small one (~1-10 people), is #GoToSocial the best bet? If it's lightweight compared to the rest, it supports post edits, longer char limits than #Mastodon, and supports Mastodon API well so it can be used in Mastodon apps then I'm sold - question is, is it?

I wonder how much progress the #fediverse could have and grow in quality if the @EUCommission could seriously fund good non-profit projects that already make an interoperable web possible: @Mastodon , @pixelfed , @pleroma , @peertube , @gotosocial etc.

There are talks about BILLIONS of euros to rearm Europe, which seems justified to me. But it seems that no one puts on the table how to seriously address the problem of disinformation campaigns that undermine democracies. I found the EU project EU vs Disinfo euvsdisinfo.eu/, but they didn't dare to create at least a profile here.

Let's perpetuate the cycle of walled gardens run by cool tech bros and their profit seeking businesses. It is very comfortable.

@vwbusguy The question is what motivates people to contribute to a given entity.

If an organization feeds the homeless, and I think that is a noble endeavor, I want to give to support it.

I use #GoToSocial and #OpenBSD and give to those projects (and in the case of OpenBSD, to its foundation).

Like you I am a regular user of Fedora, but Red Hat isn't asking us to donate to support the project.

Maybe Fedora is not the same as Firefox, but they are alike in some ways.

So, few weeks ago I've installed a second instance of #GoToSocial for testing purpose.
The primary reason was to test #slurp but finally I didn't tested it yet, lack of time but also because the #mastodon instance from which I want to test the import does not let me export the history of messages & medias :blobcatdizzy:

But ok, it's not a real problem for now, I'm not in a hurry to migrate the mastodon account.

For now what I'm trying to understand is how a #gts instance is federating and give me access to the #fediverse.
The documentation is not clear about this, or I'm dumb, it's possible too :ablobcatcoffee:

The thing is I feel a little bit alone here:

  • My local timeline is almost empty even federated with ~7700 instances; in fact, there's only what I post myself so totally useless
  • My federated timeline is filled with toot of people I'm following; that's totally useless too

It's like hem, in fact the fediverse let you follow stuff people on your instance are following and interacting with.

Currently to discover new accounts and follow topics on which I'm interested to:

  • I'm following people, they often retoot stuff I can be interested about and then, I sometime discover new accounts to follow
  • I'm following hashtags on third party instances -thanks to @phanpy for this functionality- but it's boring because I can't interact on toot without manual switch to instance...

I've been recommended by @erick (here: https://gts.erick.sh/@erick/statuses/01JN0ZCHN4M5BPWR0FFXJVQYNN) to create a dummy account and follow relay tags/instances (especially https://relay.fedi.buzz) to fill timeline of my instance.
It took me some time to understand how to do that because #GoToSocial doesn't allow like mastodon to use relays.
But basically it's pretty simple: to follow the hashtag, for example #GoToSocial, just follow @tag-gotosocial
To follow an entire timeline of an instance, for example mastodon.art, just follow @instance-mastodon.art

Then, federated timeline of my #gts instance start to be filled with a lot of stuff; starting to follow hashtags from my own instance now returns interesting content :ablobcatrave:

There's still some mystery: not all followed hashtags visible in federated timeline are available when I follow them to my instance (sometime yes, sometimes no...) and I still have tests to realize but I'm quite happy for now, it's a big step ahead about my #SelfHosting instance :ablobcatcoffee:

Hi everyone! We just made a bugfix release v0.18.2 of #GoToSocial:

https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.18.2

If you're updating to this version from v0.18.0 or v0.18.1, it's a very easy update with no db migrations or config file changes :)

If you're updating to this version from a version before v0.18.0, please follow the update instructions from v0.18.0, but replace 0.18.0 with 0.18.2 throughout. Be aware that the update to 0.18.x contains some very long migrations. Please do read the notes carefully.

This is hopefully the final bugfix release of 0.18.x, so you can stay on this one for a while while we work on v0.19.0 :)

Thanks for reading, happy slothing, acab, death to fascism, and if you have money to spare this month go donate it to these folks who need help :gtspat:

Here's version 0.18.2 of GoToSocial, hopefully the last bugfix release of 0.18.x :)

Some lil work in progress shots. Trying to make it easier for bot authors to create + manage applications, and get tokens from those created applications, without having to make calls with curl etc.

In future, nice scope selection with checkboxes will probably be available, but for now I'm just whacking something together that people can use immediately.

Question for people running small (e.g. family) or single user #fediverse #instance s.
How do you tackle moderation? Are you subscribed to a remote blocklist? Are you blocking instances?
I'm thinking of putting up a #GoToSocial instance for myself and maybe a few friends and I'm wondering if there's something like "that instance is federating with XYZ, so we don't federate with it" going on.
I don't want to federate with bigots, but I also don't want to learn about all hateful instances.

@fedistu @TheZeldaZone @linkachus17 with YunoHost.org and a basic VPS ($5/month) or a Raspberry Pi you could have an instance running in a really short time.

In December I set up YunoHost in 5 minutes… installed #GoToSocial and since then I added my own Friendica and Pixelfed instances. All on a 4GB RAM, 1 core VPS.

YunoHost does one-click updates, backups and diagnostics. It’s wonderful.

0 coding skills required, just curiosity and patience sometimes (esp with DNS records)
